Mountain Youth – Tu Guia

Services: A youth-led and adult-supported program. It is for local high school and college students to tutor elementary students from all K-5th schools in Eagle County who may need academic assistance. Tutors create the academic lessons based on the students’ needs with a component of social-emotional curriculum. The goal is to individually increase these students’ academic levels. In addition, tutors are also working to assist the students’ parents in learning how to do this work with their kids on their own in the future. It is a generational program, which makes it unique from other tutoring programs. See website for volunteer and registration information.

Cost: Free

Eligibility: Elementary and Middle school students in Eagle County.

Literacy Outreach

Services: English language classes, citizenship exam preparation, basic computer skills classes, basic math, reading and writing classes, and experiential workshops. All are offered in small groups or one-on-one settings.

Volunteers: All of our volunteers who work with students must be at least 18 years old, and they will need to attend an orientation and a 3-hour training session before being paired with a student. We ask for a 6-month commitment and 3 hours of their time weekly, which includes lesson prep time, travel to and from lessons and instruction time. No teaching experience or Spanish language knowledge is required. Volunteers must be able to read and write in English, believe in adults’ ability to learn and show empathy. We also look for volunteers on a less regular basis for events, proofreading, fundraising, building maintenance and other tasks. Give us a call or send us an email to learn more about our current needs.

Cost: $35 per year

Eligibility: Anyone over the age of 18 seeking lessons in English as a second language, basic literacy skills, basic math or computer skills can call our office, email us or come into our office to learn more. Anyone seeking classes will need to complete an intake assessment and wait until a tutor is ready to be paired with them. Our tutors come from all over Garfield County and are matched with students based on the community where they live and their hours of availability. We also pair adults studying for the citizenship exam with tutors or small groups in their area. We serve all of Garfield County.
